  • Will the race be cancelled for bad weather? The race will be cancelled in the event of lightning only. If the race is cancelled due to lightning, a 75% refund will be given to paid participants.
  • What is the temperature of Rainy Lake? Water temperature average in July is 70˚.
  • Is the bike course smooth? There are very mild hills on the bike course, it is all blacktop.  We are on county roads and a state highway (briefly) that are open to traffic.  Riders must use caution
  • Is the run course hilly? The run is flat and on blacktop.
  • Is the swim safe? The swim is in Rainy Lake.  If we get a strong wind the swim could be wavy.  If it is extremely wavy we will shorten the swim route.  We will have multiple lifeguards and spotters.  We will allow flotation devices if you want to use them.  You will never be far from shore, a buoy, or a boat.  You may rest on these if you care too.  All swimmers will be expected to use a brightly colored swim cap which will be provided in your race packet. Wet suits are optional.
  • I’m from out of town and not familiar with International Falls. Where can I stay? International Falls is a popular tourist destination due to the world-class fishing on Rainy Lake. Please visit the International Falls Chamber ( for lodging establishments. City Beach does offer overnight camping. (
  • Do I have to use a bike helmet? You are required to have bicycle helmet that is approved by the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC). Any participant that does not have an approved helmet will not be allowed to race.
    Important Details
    The Following IMPORTANT items pertain to the Backus Rainy Lake Triathlon.
    1. Participants may not participate as an individual AND a team, you have to participate as one or the other.
    2. The Backus Rainy Lake Triathlon has one transition area. You WILL NOT be able to drop your bike off the day before the race. You will need to bring it with you on race morning.
    3. In accordance with USAT rules, each age group participant shall be permitted to wear a wet suit without penalty in any event sanctioned by USA Triathlon up to and including a water temperature of 78 degrees Fahrenheit. When the water temperature is greater than 78 degrees, but less than 84 degrees Fahrenheit, age group participants may wear a wet suit at their own discretion, provided however that participants who wear a wet suit within this temperature range shall not be eligible for prizes or awards. Age group participants shall not wear wet suits in water temperatures equal to or greater than 84 degrees Fahrenheit.
    4. Body marking will take place at the registration area on race morning.
    5. The roads are open to traffic. Ride on the right hand side of the road unless instructed otherwise by a race official. For the safety of you, the athlete, we ask that spectators DO NOT drive the course while the race is in progress.
    6. Spectators will not be allowed into the transition areas.
    7. Do not park on the race course or in private parking lots or your car may be towed. Parking is allowed in the far west section of the main parking lot or in the east parking lot at City Beach.
    8. Please help our volunteers keep the countryside clean and the residents of the area happy by discarding rubbish (gel packets, water bottles, banana peels, wrappers, cups, etc.) at the aid stations while racing.
